All submissions require editorial review. The reference material below describes the published standard; it is not evidence that an individual business has been checked. No public dataset export or automated check log is offered.
\\n
First-person accounts from people running small independent things, published as they said them. There are none on the site, so this page publishes the rules any interview must follow before anyone is asked to take part.
\\n
Current state
\\n
Stories published: 0
\\n
No interviews have been conducted, so there are no stories. There will be none until real people have agreed to real conversations.
\\n
We are not going to fill this page with composites, illustrative examples, or anything produced by a model. A fabricated operator story on a site whose entire claim is that someone checked would be the single worst thing we could publish, and it would be undetectable to you — which is exactly why the rule has to be absolute.
\\n
The firewall
\\n
A story never earns a listing. A listing never earns a story.
\\n
These are two entirely separate things and neither is a route to the other. Talking to us does not improve your position with <a href=\\\"/entry-bar\\\">the entry bar, and being in <a href=\\\"/business-register\\\">the register does not put you in a queue to be interviewed.
\\n
We state this first because it is the rule most likely to be doubted, and because anyone deciding whether to talk to us deserves to know that nothing is being traded.
\\n
How we would ask
\\n
\\n
We say who we are, what the piece is for, and where it will appear, before any questions.
\\n
We say that you can stop at any point, including after the conversation and after publication.
\\n
We agree what is on the record before we start, not afterwards.
\\n
We record only with permission, and we say what happens to the recording.
\\n
Nothing is published without you seeing the quotes first.
\\n
\\n
Quote approval, concretely
\\n
\\n
\\n
\\n
You can
\\n
We can
\\n
\\n
\\n
\\n
\\n
Correct anything you said, including changing your mind about it.
\\n
Edit for length, and for the ordinary repetitions of speech.
\\n
\\n
\\n
Withdraw any quote, for any reason or none.
\\n
Ask you to reconsider once, and then accept the answer.
\\n
\\n
\\n
Withdraw the whole piece before publication.
\\n
Decline to run a piece that has become misleading through withdrawals.
\\n
\\n
\\n
Ask for the piece to be removed after publication.
\\n
Say plainly, in the piece, where you declined to answer.
\\n
\\n
\\n
Be anonymous, if being named would cost you something.
\\n
Not attribute a quote to someone who did not agree to it.
\\n
\\n
\\n
\\n
What we will never do to your words
\\n
\\n
Never rewrite them. Not by an editor to make a better sentence, and not by a model at all.
\\n
Never combine two people into one composite voice.
\\n
Never publish a quote without a capture date. An undated quote is not published.
\\n
Never take a quote from somewhere else and present it as though it was said to us.
\\n
Never use an interview to build an argument you did not know you were part of.
\\n
\\n
The capture-date rule is the one that looks pedantic and is not. Businesses change; a thing that was true when someone said it may not be a year later, and the date is what stops a quote quietly becoming a claim about the present.
\\n
Payment, and what we ask for
\\n
We do not pay for interviews, and we do not ask for anything in return for one. No link back, no badge, no mention, no reciprocal anything. If we ever start paying, this page says so before the first paid piece runs.
\\n
Withdrawing later
\\n
Unconditional, before or after publication, with no reason required and no attempt to talk you out of it. Read <a href=\\\"/delist\\\">the removal procedure. A piece someone regrets is not worth keeping, whatever its editorial merit.
\\n
\\n
<a href=\\\"/the-line\\\">Read what we refuse to publish
\\n
<a href=\\\"/entry-bar\\\">Read the entry bar
\\n
\\n
Questions about interviews
\\n
Why publish this before any interviews exist?
\\n
So that the first person asked can read the terms before deciding, rather than being told them by the person who wants the interview. A policy written after the first conversation tends to describe whatever happened in it.
\\n
Can I ask to be interviewed?
\\n
You can, and it will not move you up any queue because there is no queue. It also has no effect on register consideration, in either direction.
\\n
Will you interview businesses that are not in the register?
\\n
Yes. The two are separate on purpose, and a story about someone we would not list is a perfectly reasonable thing to publish.
\\n
What if I say something I regret?
\\n
Correct it at the approval stage, or withdraw it later. Neither requires a reason and neither will be argued with.
\\n
Do you edit for length?
\\n
Yes, and for the ordinary hesitations of speech. What we do not do is change what you meant, reorder your words to make a different point, or tidy your voice into ours.
\\n
Would a model ever touch my words?
\\n
No. Drafting elsewhere on this site is AI-assisted and we say so plainly. Anyone's quoted words are handled by a person, from the recording to the page.
\\n
Is anonymity really available?
\\n
Yes, where being named would cost you something. We would rather run a piece without a name than not run it, and we would much rather that than run it and cause someone a problem.
\\n
\\n
No story on this site is fabricated, composited or model-generated.
