Cookie policy

What this site stores in your browser, why it is stored, and how long it lasts. The list is short, and it is kept accurate rather than written once at launch and then forgotten about.

The short version

  • No third-party advertising cookies. No ad networks are present on this site.
  • No cross-site tracking, and no advertising or behavioural identifiers.
  • Login uses necessary authentication and session storage for submissions, claims, and owner tools. Reading and discovery do not require an account.
  • No social media embeds, which are one of the most common quiet sources of third-party cookies.

This page is deliberately specific rather than generic. A cookie policy that describes a site's aspirations instead of its behaviour is a page nobody can rely on, and writing one would sit badly next to everything else here.

What is stored

WhatWhyHow long
Strictly necessary storageWhatever is needed to serve pages and keep the site working correctly.Session, or as short as the function allows.
Stumble session stateA short list of the entries you have already been shown, so the stumble does not repeat itself. Held in your own browser only; it never reaches us.Discarded when this page is reloaded or closed.
Privacy-respecting analyticsA rough sense of which pages are read, without building a profile of you or identifying you across sites. As described by whatever analytics is in use, and no longer than needed.

Appearance preferences may also be stored by the site shell. If it grows, this page changes at the same time — not afterwards.

What the stumble stores, precisely

The discovery surface needs to know which entries it has already shown you in this session, or it becomes annoying. That list lives in your browser, is not sent to us, is not associated with any identifier, and is thrown away when this discovery page reloads or closes.

It is not a profile and it does not influence anything. The rotation is a uniform random draw from the eligible pool and takes no reader input at all — the rules are published in full at how the stumble works.

What is deliberately absent

  • No advertising networks, retargeting pixels or conversion trackers.
  • No embedded video, map or social widgets setting cookies on our behalf.
  • No cross-site identifiers, fingerprinting or device graphs.
  • No analytics that follows you to other sites.
  • No cookie wall, and no consent banner designed to be harder to refuse than to accept.

The absence of third-party embeds is doing most of the work here. Most sites acquire their third-party cookies by embedding something convenient, and we would rather link out than embed.

Your controls

Browser-level controls work here because there is nothing clever to circumvent them. Blocking necessary authentication storage can prevent sign-in and owner tools from working. Clearing storage may reset appearance preferences and discovery history.

Public reading and browsing remain available without signing in. Signed-in actions require a working Login session.

If this page is wrong

Tell us at corrections. A cookie policy that does not match the site's actual behaviour is a factual error like any other, and it goes in the log with a date the same way.

Questions about cookies

Because there is nothing here that would need one under the approaches we have taken: no advertising, no cross-site tracking and no third-party embeds. If that ever changes, the consent arrangement changes with it and this page says so first.

Is the analytics tracking me personally?

No. Whatever is in use is chosen not to build a profile, not to identify you, and not to follow you elsewhere. Nothing it records is used to influence what the site shows you.

Does the stumble learn what I like?

No, and it is built so that it cannot. The only thing it remembers is which entries you have already seen this session, so it does not show you the same one twice.

What happens if I block everything?

Public pages remain readable. Sign-in and protected submission or owner tools may not work if necessary storage is blocked.

Do you share anything with advertisers?

There are no advertisers. There is no advertising on this site and none of the data described here is shared with anyone for marketing purposes.

Because most of the length in a cookie policy comes from third-party services, and there are almost none here. A short list is the honest consequence of a site that embeds very little.
